For this tasting, I wanted to take the opportunity to explore some of the peak wines, showcasing a singular Terroir. California has shown time and again that it can produce world class wines of character, but single vineyards are such a unique expression, the passion project of every winemaker.

Developing the perfect blend is such a unique science that takes dedication, the single vineyard is the opposite. It is trusting and showing exactly what nature dedicated to this region for a set time.

 

2018 Morgan Double L Vineyard Chard, Santa Lucia Highland | $44.99 

Morgan's signature, single vineyard Chardonnay showcases the lush tropical fruit and minerality typical of its terroir. Rich yet balanced, this limited release is pure Double L. Pineapple, lemon custard, and vanilla bean are echoed on the palate by summer squash and butter toffee.

One of the finest food wines, the Double L Chardonnay will pair wonderfully with seafood and poultry dishes, as well as a buttery steak.

J Davies Ferrington Vineyard Pommard clone 2020 anderson valley | $91.99

The 2020 Ferrington Vineyards Pinot Noir emits beautiful aromas of plum, dark cherry, strawberry, marionberry and pomegranate, with a touch of light toast, milk chocolate and an earthy background. A clean, bright entry on the palate supports a juicy cranberry center, followed by layers of blueberry, damson plum and orange pekoe tea along the way to a long finish

Jonive Moondust Vineyard Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley | $74.99 

The wine has a typical light straw color and complex aromas of lemongrass, nutmeg, Meyer lemon, fresh oregano, and a touch of passionfruit. This Chardonnay has an enveloping mouthfeel that is at once crisp and linear as well as rich and expansive, a very unusual and beguiling combination of textures and mouthfeel. The browning of clone 17 enables the wine to be rich, but at a lower alcohol, and clone 95 contributes beautifully fresh acidity. The palate shows jasmine, honeydew melon, tarragon, lime, and lemongrass with a nice kiss of high-quality French oak. The extended lees contact gives the wine amazing length, energy, and vitality.

Round Pond Louis Bovet Home Ranch Vineyard 2018, Rutherford | $132.99 

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Louis Bovet showed beautifully, with a sumptuous, full-bodied, textured style carrying lots of darker currants and blue fruits as well as notes of tobacco, sappy herbs, flowers, and earth. It's already drinking beautifully yet has enough tannins to allow it to evolve for 20 years.

2019 Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot, Calistoga  | $129.99

The exceptional 2019 growing season produced a fascinating and elegantly full-bodied expression of Merlot at the famed Three Palms Vineyard. Luxurious aromas of black plum, boysenberry, and dark chocolate leap from the glass, followed by hints of sweet molasses and vanilla bean. On the palate, firm tannins and undercurrents of energetic acidity add brightness and poise to lush dark berry flavors, while promising a long life ahead.

Honig Bartolucci Vineyard Cabernet 2018, St Helena | $133.75

The classic cherry, berry and plum fruit characters that define the Bartolucci Vineyard are once again evident in this bottling. The wine is framed by a sense of warm, spice box characters, toast and vanilla. Concentrated and rich, this age worthy wine is quite enjoyable upon release and will easily continue to be delicious for another 10 years.
