Coattails vertical tasting july 22nd, 2023

One of the things we pride ourselves in here at Buon Vino, is being able to curate a unique experience and serve incredible wines to the community. This tasting is no exception to that either. When I joined the team, Andrew informed me of our ability to source wine that doesn't have distribution and isn't found anywhere else, and the first example he showed me was Coattails from Willamette, Oregon. After tasting through it, I'm astounded that this hasn't made it anywhere else yet, aside from the fact they are extremely small production of course!

Coattails is a partnership between the three sons – Jared, Michael, Jr., and Nathan – of Michael G. Etzel, operating partner of Beaux Frères Vineyards in the Ribbon Ridge AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. With the release of their first vintage in 2007, the Etzel brothers provided their own proof that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Decidedly evocative and intricately layered, the Coattails wines represent a quintessential addition to the Oregon story.

I came to the realization that a handful of guests may have tried through Andrew on occasion, but what better way to showcase these wines than a vertical tasting of all of their vintages!

We invite you all to come out and taste through the 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017 vintage of these stellar pinots! We will have small bites and charcuterie to accompany this tasting and elevate the wines further.

2019 Coattails "Doration" Chardonnay, Chehalem Mountains
$62.99

Young and expressive, this wine showcases that classic "Funk" and delicacy that Oregon Chardonnays can produce. Being at a higher elevation this is a chardonnay that has a beautiful acidity that shines through and makes this a special and ageworthy wine.

2013 Coattails Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
$89.99

The 2013 vintage showcases the beautiful terroir of the region, and has had a decade in the bottle to develop, and now the earth plays with the delicate fruit that this has to offer, decidedly drinking great right now, but still has time in the bottle.

2014 Coattails Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
$84.99

2014 was such a uniquely great vintage for Willamette, probably one of the best they'd seen in decades. The ripeness of the fruit met with the mineral and earth undertones make this a truly special bottle.

2016 Coattails Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge
$79.99

2016 was an extremely powerful vintage for ribbon ridge, yielding smaller more concentrated berries. This vintage is truly classic Willamette, and will continue to age gracefully. The tart crunchy fruit met with racy acidity and silky tannins makes this a new favorite for many.

2017 Coattails "Cuvee Free Loader" Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
$79.99

The cuvee was named the free loader in order to, "dedicate this wine to all those who take advantage of the greatness of life without giving anything in return." The 2017 vintage in Ribbon Ridge showcases a lot riper fruit than the previous vintage due to a warm and dry growing season, but had excellent yields and shows a racier style that is unique to the region.

This wine is sourced from Jesse James and Sequitur Vineyards.
